Proverty is the condition of being poor. I accept tha Essays - Aid Proverty is the condition of being poor. I accept that absence of instruction is an adequate reason for neediness. Without instruction, particularly now of days it is extremely testing to accomplish a better than average paying employment so one could bolster their family. In specific networks, explicitly urban communities, for example, Newark New Jersey, my old neighborhood, there is countless individuals that neglect to move on from secondary school, not to mention going to school. We can utilize the strategy for distinction on, lets state 5 individuals. 2 of them are poor, 1 of them are medium class and the other 2 are rich. The diagram will show that training, most likely secondary school is the thing that the poor were absent. Additionally, we can do a correlational report where we see the influence that their degree of training has on the destitution rate. It will in all likelihood be a constructive connection when we notice that the less training individuals get, the less cash they make, which causes neediness. A positive relationship proposes an easygoing association, and after this association is built up, a controlled trial can be performed. The gathering of individuals that are controlled can be deprived of their certificates or instructive achievements, while another gathering of individuals, who are additionally secondary school and school graduates keep their confirmations. The test will comprise of them applying to occupations and seeing which gathering of individuals were offered the most openings for work. Obviously we would find that the gathering with certificates and accreditations will be progressively fruitful in doing as such. Not all individuals without secondary school or school certificates, are unequipped for living serenely, yet the absence of training unquestionably causes neediness. There are increasingly destitute individuals, who don't have the best possible instruction to work a vocation that will really get by.

The â€Å"Waiting Period† starts when the two arrangements of guardians sign papers connoting the start of the selection. â€Å"Typically, the holding up period closes a half year after the youngster is put in the home. Ozymandias poem analysis free essay sample

Pharaoh Ozymandias was a savage despot, who believed himself to be the most powerful individual on earth; nearly as strong as a divine being. The sculpture is depicted as having â€Å"two huge and trunkless legs† (line 2) moving the peruser to grasp Ozymandias’ power; he was relentless to the point that nobody could even gauge his â€Å"vast† power. The peruser is directed to comprehend that Ozymandias was a self-important, remorseless pioneer with the words: â€Å"frown† (line 4), â€Å"wrinkled lip† and â€Å"sneer† (line 5). These physical highlights caught on the appearance uncover the Pharaoh’s genuine character as a terrible domineering pioneer, scoffing and scowling at his subjects in the event that they didn’t follow his â€Å"cold command† (line 5), demonstrating his total territory over his kingdom1. The engraving Ozymandias had put by his sculpture, permits the peruser to completely appreciate the degree of his self-importance. He believed himself to be â€Å"King of Kings† (line 10), notably better than every other person. Ozymandias expected to threaten compelling warriors too, he needed to amazement them with his capacity this is appeared with the words â€Å"ye relentless and despair† (line 11). The engraved words on the platform and the sheer immensity of the sculpture; appear to be expected to start dread and fear in the individuals who see it. Anybody contrasted with him is nothing, and worth nothing. Question 2: Ozymandias’ irate, remorseless â€Å"passions† (line 6) were so clear and solid that it was simple for the stone carver to catch them completely forever. The incongruity that the interests, so solid and loaded with life, stay just because of a â€Å"lifeless thing† (line 7) is underlined by the juxtaposition of the two differentiating words. Human desire can be solid and incredible yet except if one uses them to make something solid they will be lost perpetually, when they kick the bucket alongside the individual they consume inside †just dead, hard evidences stay to affirm our loaded with life, unconventional feelings and yearnings. Ozymandias is dead as is the stone carver, yet the pompous and merciless interests endure on account of the solid and unmistakable sculpture. The King’s enthusiasm is currently, â€Å"lone and level sands stretch far away†, yet the incredible work of the stone carver stays somewhat; vouching for his desire as a capable artist. 1 Shmoop54461332 Question3: The engraving that remaining parts close to this sculpture peruses; â€Å"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings: Look on my works, ye forceful and despair† (lines 10 and 11). As referenced before this engraving empowers the crowd to comprehend his capacity and enormity, as considerably different lords and forceful wa rriors were cautioned that they could never reach, and should surrender from attempting to come to, his level. However unexpectedly all that remaining parts is crafted by the â€Å"hand† and â€Å"heart† (line 8) of the stone carver. People are vain and seek to be recalled forever2, to leave an everlasting imprint on this world. Anyway regularly those not looking for this degree of everlasting status are the ones to get it and the individuals who do seek after it are fairly overlooked. The stone carver is currently getting all the consideration and acclaim, for his exact depiction of the Pharaoh, which Ozymandias felt he merited and in this manner endeavored to protect. The main thing that has made due of Ozymandias’ realm is the sculptor’s carvings; â€Å"stamped onto these dormant things† (line 7). Everything that took after Ozymandias’ power is presently a â€Å"colossal wreck, vast and bare† (line 13). What remains of Ozymandias’ egotism and territory is the thing that the craftsman recorded via cutting into the stone. Workmanship has suffered and filled in as instrument to protect the historical backdrop of humankind. The sculpture has remained making the stone carver become more ‘powerful’ than Ozymandias himself. Question 4: This sonnet features man’s mortality and his powerlessness to battle the intensity of nature, in spite of his perhaps outrageous physical may. â€Å"Two tremendous and trunkless legs† (line 2) drives the peruser to think about what befell the remainder of the dazzling sculpture, and become dispirited that this amazing sculpture is currently just a â€Å"colossal wreck† (line 13). This sonnet instructs us that even the most grounded and mightiest will in the end fall; Ozymandias viewed himself as the â€Å"king of kings† (line 10) however at this point his look is â€Å"half sunk† and â€Å"shattered† (line 4). The very sculpture Ozymandias thought would stay to always affirm his significance currently lies in ruins. The engraving of the platform was once planned Ozymandias’ subjects to surrender at their failure to arrive at his degree of glorious force, but at this point it appears to ask passer byes to surrender at the sorry state in which the sculpture is presently lying, to surrender at the brief idea of mankind. The scene portrayed in this sonnet brings 2 3 gradesaver Wikihow 54461332 to mind the prosaism yet evident articulation of; ‘Pride before fall’4, we looking back can see that nothing is left from Ozymandias’ may or power however what the stone worker recorded. He, who was a savage dictator; â€Å"sneer of cold command† (line 4), has his memory at the destiny of nature the stone carvers â€Å"hand† and â€Å"heart† (line 8). Ozymandias thought his capacity was so excellent it would stay for ages, yet the peruser is made to comprehend that his sculpture is rotting alone; â€Å"nothing close to remains† (line 13). The short, not-genuine, sentences of line 12: â€Å"Nothing adjacent to remains. Round the decay†, add to the feeling of certainty that man is mortal and won't keep going forever in any structure or any what way. The sonnet finishes on a discouraging note, the words â€Å"sands stretch far away† (line 14) propose to the peruser that there is no way around his mortality, nature-the sand-stops for nobody. â€Å"Far away† clues to feeling of man surrendering and surrendering to nature, losing the will to attempt stay unfading until the end of time. Question 5: The author utilizes similar sounding word usage as he parts of the bargains underline that man has no expectation, no abilities to battle and develop successful, against nature and time. The words â€Å"boundless and bare† (line 13) emphasize how forlorn the desert presently is, driving the peruser to think about what it once conceivably resembled during Ozymandias’ rule. However nothing is left from the forceful realm and the king’s sculpture is encircled by tremendous stretches of nothing. A component of frightfulness is added to the sonnet with the utilization of the words; â€Å"lone and level† (line 14), as what once had excellence and force stays as a quiet and dejected land. The â€Å"sands stretch† (line 14), another utilization of similar sounding word usage, reminds the peruser by and by that solitary nature wins. â€Å"Stretch† is a word in the current state, implying to us that the sand will keep on carrying out its responsibility of rotting the sculpture, and devastating the â€Å"two tremendous trunkless legs† (line 2), that do remain. A look at SIPA Follies 2016 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

A look at SIPA Follies 2016 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Every year, Seeples  come together to  poke fun at themselves, their professors and SIPA life in general. We call this event, Follies, which means a lack of good sense or judgment; foolish behavior, according to Merriam-Webster. Think of it as an episode  of Saturday Night Light, but with a SIPA twist!  On Saturday, SIPA hosted its umpteenth Follies, but it was the second year we held the event at the world-famous Apollo Theater, where some of the greatest  talents have performed, including  Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, and Michael Jackson.  Today, the Apollo, presents concerts, performing arts, education, and community outreach programs, which makes it possible for our  Seeples to perform on the same stage as some of their musical and comedic idols. Unfortunately, photography is frowned upon at the Apollo. Nonetheless,  I was able to snap a few photos (and videos) during the event. (Shh!) Dont worry, I kept my flash off as you can tell from the poor-looking stills below so I wouldnt disrupt the skits. While you might not understand all of the references, I hope youll still get a kick out of the images below. And who knows maybe youll be writing your own skit in two years! Heres a look at SIPA Follies 2016. SIPA Follies 2016 made it on the Apollo sign! SIPA students are required to enroll in a 0.5 credit professional development course. In this skit, they poke fun at the course and how our Career Services staff teaches Seeples about the value of a strong cover letter and resumeall to the likeness of an evangelical group that worships the good book, aka SIPAs career book. In this skit, students compete on the hit TV show Hells Kitchen. The venue: SIPAs very own Alices Cafe, on the sixth floor of IAB. This one is a video parody to Party Like a Rockstar by hip-hop group Shop Boyz. SIPAs version? Party Like a Seeple. To recruit the next class of Seeples, Dean Merit E. Janow (far right) and her colleagues enlist the help of actor Nicolas Cage (far left). His solution? Create a whole new curriculum plan including a course called American Foreign Policy: Just Set Everything on Fire. And of course, no new curriculum would be complete without a montage of his movie stills. Despite the fact its 2016, some professors still require Seeples to submit their assignments as stapled hard copies. But when there arent any staples left, whats a Seeple to do?! Here we have our very own Affan Javed (right), whos giving a presentation on his day at the UN. Before his presentation he accidentally cloned himself (Satbir Singh), so he and his clone are recounting his special visit, and the strange bathroom conversation he had with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Writing a Thesis and Topic Sentences in your Personal Statement

What's a thesis? Every applicant who needs to write a personal statement for their high school, college, or graduate admissions struggles with structuring their personal statement. It is hard enough to muster the courage to brainstorm your most salient life experiences on paper; now, the most important part is structuring your personal statement with your thesis and topic sentences. What's a thesis? Your thesis and topic sentences are tools – think of them as signposts for your reader to follow the map of your argument. Without clear, well-marked signs, the reader will be lost. A thesis statement is the main point you’re trying to communicate. That’s it. However, there are many features of a good thesis statement that you should consider when drafting your own: A good thesis statement is arguable. This means that you’re making a claim that others may dispute. Without this feature of a thesis statement, the paper will lack tension. Oftentimes a main point that isn’t arguable is boring, and/or stating the obvious. A good thesis statement anticipates what’s to come. This is essential – the think of the thesis statement as establishing rules for the game of the paper. You want to be sure that what follows the thesis statement is aligned with the theme and the evidence that you’re using in the body of your paper. A good thesis statement is clear and specific. Though you probably have many examples and themes that you want to include in your personal statement, it is important to stick to one central argument. A good thesis sentence will hold you 12 accountable to this – if you find yourself bleeding into two or three sentences, it is probably an indication that you’re trying to fit too much. How to create a thesis Now that we’ve defined a thesis, you’re curious how to create one of your own, aren’t you? Before you develop a thesis, you need to look at the evidence you’ve gathered to see if it falls in line with a clear point or idea. You’ve already done the work of grouping your evidence into buckets of theme, so now your job is to write down a â€Å"working thesis† – a point that serves as a starting place for your argument, but may change over time as you continue to tease out your evidence. What are topic sentences? If the thesis is the focus of the statement in its entirety, the topic sentences are the focus of the body paragraphs. Topic sentences are the most important sentence of the paragraph, and oftentimes extend or embellish the thesis by introducing the evidence of the paragraph. Some things to keep in mind when writing your topic sentences: A good topic sentence always supports the thesis of your paper. The topic sentences should be a litmus for staying on track with your argument. They should certainly extend, complicate, and develop your argument, but they should always support it as well. A good topic sentence should introduce the evidence that supports your claim. If you think about your paper as a court case, think about your topic sentences as a lawyer’s address to the jury. A topic sentence should always introduce the evidence that you are using to persuade a group of people – a jury of your peers. Conclusion Now that we’ve discussed the definitions of our topic sentences, you can revisit your working thesis. Keeping in mind the evidence that you’d like to use in each paragraph to support your working thesis, go ahead and write the topic sentence above the correlating piece of evidence on the following page. Are you struggling to put together a personal statement for your admissions essays? You should reach out to our writing coaches, who have tons of experience teaching writing and helping applicants create compelling narratives! ;

The Renaissance was a period of enlightenment influenced by classicalism, the rediscovery of greco-roman arts. It is considered the bridge between the Dark Ages and the Modern era. The movement originated in Italy, the country that would eventually become the focal point for the rebirth of Europe. Although Italy is attributed with creation of the Renaissance, its success was simply a result of its relationship with the Islamic world. The Islamic world enabled Europe’s transition from the Medieval period to the Renaissance. Italy became the center of the Renaissance because of its immense wealth. Marianos immense profit encouraged the Venetian population to invest in the spice business. Eventually, the Venetians controlled the trade of spices in Europe. Venices trade in the pepper business was the formative event in Venice’s business relationship with the Islamic world. The Venetians also profited from their adept shipbuilding and sailing. In 1082, the Byzantines established trade treaties with the Venetians. This agreement was formally known as the Byzantine-Venetian Treaty of 1082. The treaty provided Venice with concessions, a product that is granted in response to demands, in return for their help in the wars against the Normans. In 1453 the Byzantine Empire fell to the Arab Ottomans. It was likely that this event would mark the end of the Venetian’s concessions with Constantinople, which was now Istanbul. Nonetheless, Venice was quick to form trade treaties with the Turks, the new inhabitants of Constantinople. This mutually beneficial relationship with the Ottomans eventually became one of the most successful trade relationships in history. The Venetians and the Ottomans were logical trading partners. Venice lacked agricultural resources because of its geography. Therefore, they imported an abundance of grains provided to them by the Ottomans. Strengthening Public Health Services in Low-income Countries Zhanyan Zhu ESL-115 May 6, 2016 Introduction According to the statistics from the World Health Organization, â€Å"30,000 children under five-years of age die every day, mainly from dehydration, undernourishment, and preventable diseases. Where there are clinics and hospitals, they are too few, and they are inadequately staffed and equipped† (WHO, 2008, para.1). Theme Of Indian Camp By Ernest Hemingway - 1349 Words

Lions, Suicide, and War; Oh My! What do a lion, a suicide, and a war have in common? Connected or not, these three factors can influence the characters behavior whether it be in or out of a figurative sense. These three components are also very symbolic in Ernest Hemingways writing, more specifically in his short stories â€Å"Indian Camp†, â€Å"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber†, as well as the interchapters from In Our Time. Ernest Hemingway’s portrayal of conflict creates a violent normality in some of his stories. This is shown by the character’s response to suicide, hunting, and war. In â€Å"Indian Camp†, the character Nick is a child following his father and his uncle to an Indian camp, with good intentions, to help a woman give birth,†¦show more content†¦He could be referring to the wifes screaming during the birth, his pain from his accident, or some other unmentioned reason. The doctors initial reaction to the harsh news was to shield his son from death and viewing something that could make him grow in a different direction, even though neither were prepared for what they saw. The doctor made the body clearly visible to his son with the light. The light could symbolize Nicks veil of innocence to be removed from his life because he had just witnessed the birth of another human being, yet also the death of another. This removal of his veil was very abrupt and no one intended for it to happen at that moment. The death of the Indian husband came as a shock to the characters and even though it was unintended, it still played a major part in the t one of the birth of the Indian baby. Francis Macomber is a man of great wealth as well as a beautifully unfaithful wife, on a hunting expedition in Africa. On this trip, he and his partner, Wilson, are on the hunt for many different kinds of game, such as buffalo and lion. The lion in this story causes Francis to become panicked and doubtful as he nears the time to shoot his cat, he does everything in his power to avoid chasing after it. Impact Of Globalization On The World System - 969 Words

Thougts on Globalization 1. In order to identify the three types of nations discussed in the texbook, I would like to first start by defining what the world system theory is. â€Å"The modern world system is a capitalist global economy which contains multiple states and a single dominant international division of labor† (Doob, 2008). This definition helps us understand that the economy is not scattered accross the globe equally between all countries, instead only a few countries are posses a sucessful industrial, economical, and ploitical history. Being born and raised in Albania, and moving here to the US only 3 years ago has given me the opportunity to view these concepts clearly. The three naions are divided in this way- the core nation, the semiperipheral nation, and the peripheral nation. Or the rich, the middle income, and the poor. The Journal of World Systems Research explains â€Å"World-system dynamics create persistent cross-national differences in levels of economic development, including levels of income and domestic economic structure, which in turn create divergent levels of income inequality† (Graigner Kwon Mahutga, 2013). The core nation is the rich nation. The nation(s) which has managed to obtain a progressive industrial history, influences in the world system both economically and politically. The Mayflower Compact Free Essays

Morison’s quote does not diminish the importance of early documents such as The Mayflower Compact. It only puts it in context of part of a larger process that began with the English settlement of North America. The compact did not create a plan for Democracy. We will write a custom essay sample on The Mayflower Compact or any similar topic only for you Order Now It did, however, establish a theoretical framework that would grow over the succeeding centuries. In 1620 the Pilgrims created a document of self-governance. It was meant to foster a better society, if only within their small colony. It was a combination of religious ideals and ideals of freedom. The Mayflower Compact was not a constitution. It did, however, implant ideas that would be central to the creation of a new and prosperous nation The Origins When the Pilgrims sailed for North America, nothing was assured. They were taking a tremendous risk with their lives. Past settlements had been decimated by weather, disease and Indian attacks. Despite the hardships, the settlers saw the new world as a great opportunity. Many were fleeing from religious persecution in Europe. While they remained loyal to the King of England, the fact was that the new settlers were far from his direct control. Some on board the Mayflower saw this as a chance to form a better and more just government. The Mayflower had landed far north of Virginia, its original destination. The settlers knew they were beyond the control of the Virginia Company. They would have to make do on their own. Knowing that past settlements had failed because of a lack of coherent government, the settlers took steps to remedy the problem. In 1620, they wrote the Mayflower compact. It was a basic theory of government. The settlers past experiences with religion and various forms of persecution influenced the document. The theory of government stated in the Mayflower Compact would, in time, become the prevailing model for a democratic society. The compact begins by paying homage to the King, but goes on to spell out the ideas of freedom that form the bedrock of American culture. The Ideals The signers of the Mayflower compact were Puritan separatists. For pragmatic reasons they recognized the King of England. They were primarily concerned, however, with staying in the good graces of God. They brought with them a unique combination of experiences and motives. The Puritans wanted a society more in accordance with their religion. However, they also had experienced the pain of religious persecution. They innately understood the danger of an all-powerful government. While they were firm in their religious beliefs, they wanted to limit how much those beliefs were written into future laws. The result was a local government based on social contract. It was pragmatic, given the small size of the colony. Everyone had to work together for survival. It was also idealistic in its aims. The social contract was not a new idea, but the settlement of America gave the first opportunity to use it on a large scale. The social contract was necessary to encourage further settlements that could survive away from a central government. The Mayflower Compact created a theoretical template to do this. The Pilgrims called their creation a â€Å"civil body politik† (Dahl, 2000). Its purpose was to enact just laws that would benefit the colony as a whole. The Plymouth colony eventually succeeded. Other colonies adopted the ideas of the Mayflower Compact, and the social contract became the primary form of government in America. The Lasting Impact Here was a unanimous and personal assent by all the individuals of the community to the association by which they became a nation. John Adams, 1802 (from The Pilgrim Hall Museum, 1998) The Mayflower Compact started a process by which democracy took root in America. Success breeds success. The Plymouth colony provided an example that people can thrive by essentially ruling themselves. The feeling that the colonists didn’t need an all-powerful king set in over the first hundred years of European colonization. The eventual products of this feeling were the Declaration of Independence and the new United States Constitution. The society that sprung from the Mayflower Compact made room for the wide variety of people that would come to America in future years. Freedom encouraged ever more immigration, and democracy was strengthened. The Mayflower Compact itself was not a blueprint for democracy. It did, however, plant the seeds of freedom with self-restraint. That idea is central to American democracy. Sources Dahl, Robert A. (2000). On democracy. New Haven: Yale University Press. Certainty vs doubt free essay sample

Certainty and doubt co-exist. The is no doubt without certainty (vice versa). The growth of the idea may be swayed by evidence (verbal, visible, or experience). Verbal evidence is not always credible and relies on the character of the person speaking; however, the speaker may conceal or twist the truth around to arrive at a logical point of view, therefore any person may believe the persons point. Lawyers, magicians, and politicians use pieces of the truth to direct certainty or doubt about their subjects. Certainty and doubt lies within an athlete’s own mind; it creates a drive that keeps them going. Belief holds certainty and doubt together. Certainty and doubt comes from experience. A two-year-old girl may doubt that fire is hot and dangerous. Verbal evidence would have already been given to her by that age by her parents or the adults around her. Visual evidence would have been given by television; television or commercials show people touching fire, and getting hurt. We will write a custom essay sample on Certainty vs doubt or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Those pieces of evidence would only suit the girl for a short amount of time. After the allotted amount of time, the girl would want to experience fire first-hand. The child will realize that fire is hot and dangerous once it burns her. Certainty has now set-in. When the girl grows up, she will forever know that fire is hot and can possibly hurt her. Any claim who contradicts her experience, she will have doubt it. From past experiences, she has established, certainly, that fir is hot. Doubt is elicited in the opposing statement, when a claim opposes all evidence she has received. Doubt and certainty are both present and are aware of each other. Doubt and Certainty do not have to be on the same claim, but inhabit the same idea. A lawyer draws conclusions to create certainty or doubt. They use deceptive tactics to detour accusations and relate to sympathy of the jury. An objective jury is nonexistent. Jury’s are influenced by characteristics (emotions, reason, ethos, appearance) of a lawyer. A lawyer may elicit emotions from their client to give reason for harsh actions that the client has committed. A lawyer wants to create doubt in the jury’s mind. As the prosecutor attempts to paint a horrid picture of a defendant, the defending lawyer must create doubt. The defense lawyer wants the jury to doubt the accusations claimed by the prosecutor. Doubt is the key to the defense lawyers’ strategy. The prosecutor has already made the jury certain the defendant was guilty. It is the defense lawyer’s job to create doubt to win the case. The defense lawyer wants the jury to doubt the prosecutor. Without certainty, the defense lawyer cannot create doubt. The lawyer provided not only verbal evidence, but also visible evidence. That evidence would cause doubt winning the case. To win the case, the same could be said for the prosecutor, doubt cannot prosper without certainty. Certainty and doubt co-exist. A magician uses the faults of the eyes to create certainty, and then astonishes their audience with something that was unlikely going to happen. They require visible evidence to trick their audience. A magician will use diversion or distraction to captivate their audience. Then, reveal an opposite outcome to bewilder their audience. Their purpose is to captivate and intrigue the audience, which will happen when the audience’s confidence in their eyes and certainty is diminished. Certainty must be present, for the magician to astound his audience when the outcome is different than what the audience expected. The audiences’ certainty relies on common sense. Common sense has been practiced throughout their life, so there would be no reason to doubt their conclusion when visual evidence has been demonstrated before their eyes. The magician relies on the certainty of the audience to trick them. Doubt will introduce itself, when common sense and visual evidence has failed them. Doubt will, eventually, be present because of certainty. After many trials of the audience’s incorrect assumptions, they doubt will their senses. Magicians need doubt and certainty to co-exist (as they do) to succeed in their illusions. Doubt and certainty are present in all scenarios. They depend on each other to make the best outcome. Visual evidence, verbal evidence, or experience all support doubt and certainty. Visual evidence and experience are not as easy be control or sway with bias. Verbal evidence is the easiest the control. Saying something in one way may influence some ones doubt or certainty. Doubt and certainty co-exist.

Achillies essays

Achillies essays Achilles was one of the many, numerous heroes of the great Trojan War. He has a great story that goes along with his adventures. A man who wrote poems about wars named Homer tells his story in the Iliad. He was a great warrior of the Trojan War because of what his parents did to him when he was young. Because of what his parents did when he was young, he could not be defeated and was a major threat to other enemies, but was a great asset to the country he fought for. Achilles had two parents like most people. His mother was a Nereid named Thetis. She was a sea nymph. Thetis was an immortal nymph. The mortal Peleus fell in love with her, but she avoided him by turning herself into various slippery animals. She turned herself into various slippery animals to try to avoid him because she didnt want to have anything to do with him and she didnt like to be around him. Eventually Peleus caught Thetis. She was very well known for her many inventions. She was well known by both gods and mortals because she made inventions for both the mortals and the gods. An example of her helping gods and mortals is when Hephaestus was cast by Zues from Heaven, and fell into the sea. When hephaestus was cast from Heaven, Thetis had to help him and get her out of the sea. She married Peleus and their wedding indirectly brought on the Trojan War. All the gods except for the goddess of Discord, Eris had been invited by Zues to the wedding of Achilles parents. Eris was jealous so to get even, Eris tossed a golden apple in the midst of the gathering, and labeled it To the Fairest. A fight soon ensued between the beautiful goddesses Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena, as to who the rightful recipient of the golden apple should be. The decision was left to a Shepherd named Paris, who awarded the apple to Aphrodite on the promise of winning the hand of Helen. Helen was considered to be the most beautiful mortal. Ap...

psych essays The five journal articles I examined were all from a journal titled Developmental Psychology, May 2000. The first journal article that I observed was Sleep Patterns and Sleep Disruptions in School-Aged Children. This study assessed the sleep patterns, sleep disruptions, and sleepiness of school-age children. Sleep patterns of 140 children (72 boys and 68 girls; 2nd-, 4th-, and 6th-grade students) were evaluated with activity monitors (actigraphs). In addition, the children and their parents completed complementary sleep questionnaires and daily reports. The findings reflected significant age differences, indicating that older children have more delayed sleep onset times and increased reported daytime sleepiness. Girls were found to spend more time in sleep and to have an increased percentage of motionless sleep. Fragmented sleep was found in 18% of the children. No age differences were found in any of the sleep quality measures. Scores on objective sleep measures were associated with subjective reports of sleepiness. Family stress, parental age, and parental education were related to the child's sleep-wake measures. The next article I observed was Shared Caregiving: Comparisons Between Home and Child-Care Settings. The experiences of 84 German toddlers (12-24 months old) who were either enrolled or not enrolled in child care were described with observational checklists from the time they woke up until they went to bed. The total amount of care experienced over the course of a weekday by 35 pairs of toddlers (1 member of each pair in child care, 1 member not) did not differ according to whether the toddlers spent time in child care. Although the child-care toddlers received lower levels of care from care providers in the centers, their mothers engaged them in more social interactions during non-working hours than did the mothers of home-only ...

Past and Present Politics and Development Research Paper

Past and Present Politics and Development - Research Paper Example In his tour, he learnt that the natives were always hostile to the new people who purportedly brought in new blood into the political organization and development practices of the natives. In the early years, missionaries played a predominant role in changing the political and organizational scenario of the places where they went. The traveling of missionaries to places that had not developed economically marked the beginning of civilization and modernization in most undeveloped or underdeveloped societies. It was only after the insurgence of missionaries that native undeveloped societies began to embrace peace, governance, professionalism such as teaching, soldiers, doctors and bureaucrats all of whom contributed to the common good of the societies. Diamond (1999) believed that the first step to the true development of the society was through the practice of agriculture on commercial basis. Given that the ancient people and not so long ago the undeveloped states had no regular econo mic specialization and land was subdivided among group members and subgroups, the political organization was considered egalitarian. ... d since Eurasia which was blessed with local/indigenous domestic able grain cereals and animals that facilitated traction animals like the donkeys and bulls. This encouraged the development of commercial large scale agriculture which enabled economic growth and also stratified societies such that there emerged social classes. Reasons for Lack of Single or Complex \political Organizations Although Diamond argued that states â€Å"expand and develop based on their level of agricultural practice and that this happens in a virtuous circle† (1999, p. 266), there have been occurrences that counter his argument which in Diamond’s view was assumed and therefore needs to be added to the theory of why states develop and expand. Therefore, it implies that, instead of states eventually growing to large and more complex organizations, there is either unequal growth of societies into becoming on single large complex organization or eventual stagnation of states. This lack of large an d more complex organizations are attributed to internal factors within the States themselves; a fact Diamond does not incorporate in his theory. The first reason is based on the fact that political organizations are slowly, but steadily emerging that is not necessarily egalitarian in nature. In other words the states themselves are greedy and are often unwilling to distribute public funds that are supposed to facilitate growth of complex organizations. Secondly, given the divergent states interests, it is hard or perhaps impossible for the world to attain a single world or complex organization that Diamond proposes (Diamond 1999, p. 290). In the face of democracy and human rights, political organizations and by far autonomy is slowly revolving into a new era of leadership and political authority. In the

Personal Statement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Personal Statement - Essay Example Since I began high school, I have developed a significant interest in economic issues. For instance, I closely followed developments in regards to the â€Å"Financial Tsunami† and the Chinese economic bubble. As a member of the Economics Club, I discussed many pertinent issues related to global economics. In my spare time, I watch financial news programming and am enthusiastic about discussing world economic issues. Recently, I have conducted significant research into the European Sovereign Debt Crisis. This situation greatly interests me as it affects us all through the increasingly interconnected globalized world. As an economics student, I appreciate the Keynesian perspective to a market crisis. The past decade’s spread of neo-liberalism resulted in both politicians and everyday citizens trusting the miraculous power of the self-regulating market. The 2008 economic tsunami demonstrated that no society can stop economic deterioration without government intervention. I n addition, Mr. Bernanke has succeeded in applying Monetarist principles in rescuing the United States economy. Hence, I believe that the combined effects of Keynesian economics and Monetarism are stronger than any single macroeconomic theory and will ultimately lead the way for future economic growth and recovery. Nevertheless, microeconomic analysis is essential for business. I had a valuable experience with business as I was born into a business family. While I was a senior in high school, I worked at my father’s office and became intimately familiar with the experience of selling products and purchasing supplies. This working experience enforced my comprehension of the conceptual applications of economics, such as marginal and utility concepts. Besides the work experience outside school, in 2007 and 2009 I participated in the â€Å"

Analyzing The Loss Of Cultural Identity In India English Literature Essay

Analyzing The Loss Of Cultural Identity In India English Literature Essay Sherman Alexies award winning novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time deals with the story of a young Native American, Junior or Arnold Spirit that deals with the issues within his own Native Americans society and also the issues within the white Americans. Native Americans were always associated with bad impressions or unproductiveness economically in their surrounding society. Their generalisation and history of the Native Americans were something to be looked at before to trace the sources or the causes such bad impression of the Native Americans as a whole. Through time and changes in the Native American society, their society as one, struggled with challenges to maintain their culture but despite all their resistance they do lost their cultural identity gradually because of the way their opportunities for having a better life have been blocked by their oppressor directly and indirectly. In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (TATDOAPTI), when we look at the chapter because a geometry is not a country somewhere near France, the introducing of a sloppy teacher, Mr. P that was so forgetful and even at one time wore pyjamas to teach reflected the un-seriousness attention or concern that the community had given for youngsters education and in this story, Arnold Spirit, Rowdy, and the rest of the youngsters at the reservation. The text book that he had thrown to Mr. P is his mothers old text book. What can Arnold learn through his mothers old text book when the world outside his reservation which is the white kids school, have newest, revised, and improved text book? Arnold and the rest of the youngster that is still studying old text book would only be left behind and their competence level are just not enough to match the world or the society outside the reservation. The question of how Native Americans cultural identity be sustained if they are facing with major problems like poverty? The very best way to describe why they are living in a poor lifestyle is because of they are moved into reservations with no opportunities. In Robin M. Leichenkos writing, Does Place Still Matter? Accounting For Income Variation across American Indian Tribal Area, high rate of poverty were scored by the Native American tribes as the land that their being moved to, the reservations, were located in remotely rural regions that gives us the idea on how low their per capita income. Native Americans society that lives in the reservations has limited access to resources like markets, good infrastructure and has to live in a lower cost of living thus, when poverty becomes a problem of a society, poverty creates social problems such as violence, alcoholism and lack of education. In TATDOAPTI it is obvious that Arnolds community is in the state of a low cost living or poor life style. Poverty plays its role in Arnolds way of getting to school where he had to use several ways just to get to his school like hitchhiking, and walking 22 miles to get to school when his father cannot afford to buy gas money for his car or when there is no one to give him a ride. Education in Native Americans plays important roles in whether to sustain their cultural identity or to lose their own Native Americans cultural identity. The form of education will affect ones society whether to embrace and keeping their cultural identity alive or to erase their memory of their own cultural background. Sheman Alexies novel reflects how the Native Amerrican oppressor, which is the white Americans, would try to erase them in schools form their cultural backgrounds or identity through teachers like Mr. P himself. Mr. P roles as a teacher turns out to become a culture eraser in school where he taught the Native American with expired knowledge which makes the Indian becomes incompetence and the way he tried to deplete Arnolds Native American culture by making them give up being Indians and to leave their culture heritage such as their myths, songs and dance. In Indian Removal: Manifest Destiny or Hypocrisy by David L. Ghere, he stated on how Native Americans were removed and what did the white Americans did to keep them stay in reservations. Secretary of War John C. Calhoun in 1818 justifies the Indian Removal policy by stating that, the Native Americans are not to be considered as independent and with a good combination of force, punishment and rewards, they will obey to the law and civilization. He also stated that if the native Indian were left to take care of them they will never have a better life. His statement cannot be true as Native Americans were the ones who survived themselves, even before the imperialist comes to their place and took everything. We can see that the white Americans tried to manipulate the Native American ways of living to their advantage. One way of taming Native Americans is to introduced then to Christianity so they would be bound by rules and would be easy to manipulate Native American once they are devoted Christians. According to a member of a tribe Speckled Snake, a Creek elder aged 100+ in 1829 said that when the white American came with no survival skills, the Native American helped t hem to survive but when the white American become stronger society, they betray the native American and became their Great Father and said Get a little further form me, you are too near In The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian, Arnold is a Christian and when her sister died, her mother keeps on going to church to pray while his father keeps on drinking. When we see this situation, the Native Americans had been assimilated and gradually their cultural background flies away. Native American also struggled to preserve their cultural background though they are losing them gradually. According to Bruce Ballenger, in his article Methods of Memory: On Native American Storytelling, Native American spreads their culture through stories whether they are in myths, songs and even dance. In Native American storytelling, personal memory is not important as the racial memory is more important so that they can preserve their cultural values. Remoulding the past into their present is the purpose of the stories. In TATDOAPTI we can see that how Arnolds society handed down stories like the story about the scary lake that was told by his father, the powwow celebration that has last for more than 100 years and when his grandmother died, Arnold can recall what his grandmother was like in her younger days, even though he did was not born. People in the reservation have shared stories to handed down to one generation to another generation. When talking about maintaining their culture, the society was against Arnolds decision to go to Rearden as what Arnold is doing is never been done by other people in their society and his decision is against the way their culture works. After that Arnold was despised and out casted by his own society like when he came to play at Wellpinit high school, he was called by bad names. The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian really has shown us the reality of the harsh life of the Arnolds Native American society where they had problem with lack of education, less resource of economy and were living in a rural area which makes it harder to live. The government should play major roles in helping the Native Americans as they were the one who help them to survive their lives in the first place way back ago. Native Americans need to do something to maintain and not losing their cultural identity by going outside of their community and start a better life outside of the reservations but still living in their beliefs and customs of who they are as Native Americans.

DNA Research Paper

DNA is a nucleic acid that is basis of genetic information. It is like a set of instructions for our bodies and genetic codes. DNA has many different components that make it up such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phospurous. The structure has two long polymers of a simple unit called nucleotides. Holding the back of the structure is sugar and phosphate which are attached by ester bonds. Bonded to each sugar is 4 different types of molecules called bases. The backbone of the dna is where the genetic information is stored. The code is read by copying stretches of DNA into the related nucleic acid RNA, in a process called transcription. Properties in DNA once put together make the structure scientists see under the microscope discovered by James D Watson. The structure is two helical chains coiled around the same axis. It’s two long strands twirl around like vines on each other in the shape of a double helix. The nucleotide repeats which is a base linked to sugar and one or more phosphate. The back bone of most DNA strand is made form is made from phosphate and sugar resides. Phosphate is a inorganic chemical that is a sale of phosphoric acid they are mined to obtain phosphorous that is used in agriculture. The sugar in dna is 2 deoxyribose which is pentose which is a 5 carbon sugar. Many bonds hold the dna together such as hydrogen bonds, and phosphodiester bonds. And the four bases are adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine. The bases attach to the sugar/phosphate which when attached make up a nucleotide. DNA plays a dramatic role in todays society such as paternity tests, criminal investigations, and genetic engineering. A forensic scientist can test blood, semen, skin, saliva, or hair found at any crime scene to solve crimes committed. When used for genetic engineering manipulation of the DNA is used and therefore synthetic genes are made and put into things such as food or animals. Genetically modified food has been on the market since 1994. An insulin producing bacteria produced since 1982. This simple yet complicated acid plays important roles from being copied to cure a disease. From holding genetic information Like a CPU for you body. Or solving a murder case. I can honestly say before doing this report I had no idea really what DNA was.

Mark Prior

Luck has had little to do with Mark Prior’s success as a ballplayer. It was his dedication and  talent that landed Prior in the major leagues and perhaps a lack of luck that attributed to the right-  handed pitcher being sidelined during the peak of his career. But at age 26, Prior is optimistic of  a comeback. When Prior debuted with the Chicago Cubs on May 22, 2002, he was nothing short of  impressive which should have been expected considering he was the second overall pick in the  draft. His record earned him all-star status as he was chosen to play in the 2003 All-Star game in  only his first full season in the major leagues. Prior’s pitching technique seemed flawless and was considered a combination of the styles of  Greg Maddox and Roger Clemens. His first full season with the Chicago Cubs ranked him third  in the National League’s Cy Young Award voting with a record of 18 wins and only six losses.  Prior became well known for his 90-plus mph fastball, curveball, slurveball and changeup. But freak accidents and injuries began to disrupt his career in the making. Numerous stints on  the disabled list and now an entire season on hold to recuperate from shoulder surgery have  many questioning the future of the once valued Cubs pitcher. Born September 7, 1980, Prior attended University of San Diego High School where he  excelled on the ball field. As a 1998 graduate, he had a 0.93 earned run average. Prior was then  drafted by the New York Yankees in the amateur draft but a contract was never negotiated and  signed. He began his college education at Vanderbilt University, the same school his father attended.  During his sophomore year, Prior transferred to the University of Southern California (USC).  There he was honored as one of the best collegiate athletes in the country. Prior pitched for USC for two seasons and earned numerous awards including seven national  Player of the Year awards. As a junior, his record was 15-1 with six complete games and three  shutouts. His ERA was 1.69. He earned the prestigious Golden Spikes Award. He also led the  team to the 2000 College World Series. Prior entered the draft again and this time he was chosen as the second pick overall in the  draft. As he concentrated on his baseball career and the hope of one day being called up to play  for the Chicago Cubs, Prior continued his college education on a part-time basis and eventually  earned a business degree in 2004 from the USC Marshall School of Business.  In 2003, his first full season as a pitcher for the Cubs, his talent was obvious as he tallied an  18-6 win-lose record despite missing three starts due to an injury. Prior was injured when he  collided on the field with the Atlanta Braves second baseman Marcus Giles. Both Prior and Giles  were scheduled to play in the 2003 All-Star Game but missed due to their injuries.  Prior was voted Player of the Month in August and September. He went on to earn a 10-1  record as the Cubs made their way into the playoffs. That led to the infamous fan interference  incident in which Steve Bartman caught a fly ball hit into the stands that could have easily been  caught by the Cubs outfielder. The Cubs ended up losing the game and Prior suffered through the  loss. In 2004, Prior missed the first two months of the season with an Achilles tendon injury.  Although rumors surfaced that Prior needed reconstructive elbow surgery, he returned to the  mound with a less than stellar performance with six wins and four losses and an ERA of 4.02.  Again in 2005, Prior started the season on the disabled list. He returned and was pitching up  to par until May 27th when another misfortune came his way. Prior was pitching to Brad Hawpe, an old rival from LSU who hit a three-run homerun off  Prior in the College World Series. As they faced off in the major leagues, Hawpe drilled a pitch  and sent a 117 mph line drive back to Prior, hitting him in the right elbow and putting him on the  disabled list with a compression fracture. Prior finished the season 11-7 in 27 starts.  During spring training the following year, Prior began to feel a stiffness in his throwing  shoulder. He was put on a slow pitch program and sent for tests that revealed he had a strained  shoulder. He was put on the disabled list for 15 days in March missing the start of the 2006  season. When he returned, he gave up six runs to the Detroit Tigers in the first inning. He went  on to earn a devastating 0-4 record with a 7.71 ERA and was once again put on the disabled list  after straining his left oblique during batting practice. He returned to the minor leagues and three  games later, Prior earned his first win of the year against the Pittsburgh Pirates. By August of 2006, he was back on the disabled list with tendonitis for the remainder of the  season. His record was 1-6 and ERA was a high 7.21.During the off-season, he complained of a loose shoulder and when conditioning did not  improve the situation, Prior sought medical treatment and discovered he would need arthroscopic  surgery on his right shoulder. In April, Prior underwent surgery and it was successful but put an early end to the 2007  season before it even began for him. Because of his age, doctors see no reason Prior cannot  return to pitching in 2007. RESOURCES MLB Advanced Media, LP (2001-2007) Chicago Cubs. Gender Inequality Improving Or Declining Research Paper

Shelly Shtern Mrs. Phipps Period 4 English 12 8 May 2015 Gender Inequality: Improving or Declining? Research Paper Throughout much of our education of history, women have been treated in one of two ways: looked down upon or completely ignored altogether. They have had very little say in the world, and when women tried to stand up for themselves, they were always pushed back. As Abigail Adams once stated, â€Å"...remember the ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation† (Adams, 1776). She wrote to her husband, John Adams, strongly persuading him and the government to not disregard the women who fought for American independence. Her letter was the first step in the battle of equal rights for women. As time went by, the â€Å"innate† differences between men a nd women were proven to not be as innate and unchangeable as previously believed.
